Trail 100 and Greg's inagural Turner DW 5 Spot Ride
When Gregs' 6 year old Specialized FSR bit the dust a few weeks ago, we finally got together for our own version of a bike 'demo' ride.
We hit Trail 100 at night and I loaned him my 2009 Turner DW Link 5 Spot. One ride and he was sold!
After some back and forth on the 'make vs buy' decision, he ordered up the frame direct from Turner Bikes (in California) and it showed up the next day.
Then we spent the next few days emailing back and forth over parts. I also left my 2005 Titus Motolite with him so he had something to ride while waiting for the new frame to arrive, and to get an idea of another mfgrs frame for comparison.
Got the bike built up last Thursday evening:

AZ Wado Karate Belt Test 08-10-2009
Took the FujiFilm Finepix S9100 along with the slave flash setup I have for grabbing pics of the kids at tonights belt test. Not impressed with the 'softness' of the photos. I'm getting spoiled by 12MP versus 9MP I guess? The S9100 took some killer outdoor MTB Action shots
like *this* one... but indoors I haven't found the magic combination to take good shots. More and more I'm finding myself grabbing the Kodak P880 or the Kodak Z980.
It may be time to FleaBay this sucker.. oh well, live and learn! :)

Az MTBR 'Double Bypass' Ride
I went Saturday for a ride up in the McDowell / Sonoran Preserve in Scottsdale, AZ. Many of the group were doing the 'Quadruple Bypass' ride. Thus named because you climb up and over 4 passes as you circumnavigate the preserve. I ended up just doing a 'Double Bypass' which was enough for me mileage wise. I need to get out and do these trails more often. They are such a bear to climb up that you get a tremendous workout, even if you have to push/carry your bike uphill for part of the way!
The Garmin 'Connect' website looks like it's gone through some upgrades as of late. Check out this link to the data from the ride that day. You can play it back in your web browser, and it steps through the waypoints and annotates the data. Pretty neat!
The engineer in me loves this kind of stuff, although the truth of the data is sometimes a bit of a blow to the ego!

Mountain Biking South Mtn,
Greg and I met at the Cactus Bike parking lot today for a quick couple hours jaunt on SoMo. We rode from there, to the trailhead, then up Mormon to National, then back down.
The weather was perfect! Had one small spill, nothing of consequence, a great day to get out!

Yosemite 2008!
We're back from the fall camping trip to Yosemite Valley.
The boys had a great time, made some new friends and got
lots of hiking and exploring in. While there, we heard the
rockfall from Glacier Point (above Curry Village)
Sounded like the trash truck was up early that morning
(6:45am or so?) but then it kept going, and you could hear
the rushing sound (wind) after the main thunder sound went
away. We were camped all the way at the far end of Upper Pines
(about 200yards from the Happy Isles trail head area. My
thoughts immediately went back to the 1996 rockfall that wiped out
that area, and how close we were camped to that spot, then the 1999 rockfall that took the life of a young climber. Yikes!

Kodak V1273 Digital Camera Review
This new camera from Kodak, the V1273) was announced at CES 2008 in Jan.
It just started showing up in stores, the past month or so. What intrigued me about the camera was primarily, it's ability to shoot HD video and wide format photos. 3 of the 5 TV's in our house are now 16:9 format and can deal with the various HD resolutions, so why not? Also, if you're a Macintosh fan, this camera saves its video in Quicktime mpeg-4 format. This helps enable you to pull it right into iMovie, FCE and FCP or QuicktimePro very easily.

While I can say I'm still a big fan of Canon Digital Elph cameras, this compact unit from Kodak and the forthcoming Panasonic Lumix FX500 have some serious features to consider.
Touch screen LCD is cool, very similar to say, an iPod touch. I'm guessing it will burn through the battery quickly and it is a bit harder to see in sunlight. On the flip side, the camera is extremely simple, and super clean. Not many buttons at all!
The "SMART" feature seems to do pretty well outdoors. Rapid fire (for kids sports) is limited to sequences of 3 still photos. (the SD850IS just keeps taking them, till the memory buffers, if you choose a lower megapixel setting whereas the V1273 gives you 3 photos and thats it.
More time playing with the features will help. With 12 Mega Pixels and HD sizes thats a lot of data to push around. Mpeg-4 is also pretty taxing, from a hardware point of view so that might explain some of the sluggishness in the operation of the v1273. On a positive note, this is one of *THE FIRST* digicams that I've used in recent memory, that allows you freedom to zoom in/out while shooting video. Of course, holding this thing steady is extremely difficult, compared to a larger sized Mini-DV or HD Camcorder.
Mind you, it's not that bad really, it's just that I've been pretty spoiled with the Canon which has a bit better image stabilization while shooting video. Consider this video, shot from a road bicycle, while doing 35Mph with a Canon SD850IS :-)

I *really* like the wider angle lens on the SD850IS, and am looking forward to the debut of the new Panasonic Lumix with the 25mm-125mm effective focal length, Leica lens.
Overall, not a bad entry at a $275 price point. You'll get some great shots and video from this thing in a small, clean package.

Only a couple of miles to go!
I took this shot just past the Mt. Lemmon Ski area. We did the ride from the bottom to the top (7631 ft. of climbing) on my 43rd birthday. It took me about 4 hours and 20 minutes (that included a couple of 20-30 min rest stops along the way)
Great day for a bike ride. After reaching the top, we changed into our hiking clothes, and shouldered our backpacks, heading down to Rap Rock for 500ft of rockclimbing!

Squeezing the Lemmon
It's in the bag.. 4hours of riding, and 7600+ feet of climbing later we made it. Whew.. bring on Mtb Season!
